If you travel to Anchorage you must try to spend some time in the Mananuska Valley. The deep trough known as the Mananuska Valley was formed centuries ago by glaciers. When the glaciers retreated, they left behind a broad 80 mile long passageway marked by sparkling lakes, bedrock buttes, and rolling forests and meadows ribboned by silt-laden streams.

The Mananuska begins just north of Eklutna, about 30 miles north of Anchorage, and reaches northeastward to the Mananuska Glacier, westward to the Susitna River, and southward to Knik along the Knik arm. Mananuska is the state's agricultural heartland; the valley's field's grow grain, hay and sometimes some oversized vegetables.
